Aly's "I love ART" Party Part 1

We celebrated our daughter's 6th birthday this past Saturday with an art themed party, which we called Aly's "I Love ART" party. Today I am going to share some of the prep work that went into the party favors that I made. Trying to spend as little as possible I figured it would be best  to make as much as possible from scratch!

The very first favor I made was homemade water colors paints. This photo shows them right after I made them, when they dried out they were more pastel looking and not vibrant at all. I had purchased the Wilton favor tin kit at Target over 3 years ago for 75% off making each tin only .20 each BONUS! Each guest received 3 tins, one with red, blue and yellow paints inside.

3 tbsp baking soda
3 tbsp cornstarch
3 tbsp white vinegar
1 1/2 tsp light corn syrup
Mix together then poor into individual containers
Add food coloring to each container and mix.

I found this recipe online here and I am not sure if I messed it up by using paste food coloring, but it took 3 days to finally dry out. I didn't want to attempt putting sloppy wet paint containers in the favor container. Luckily I started this a week ahead, otherwise I would have been in trouble if I did it the night before.

The next homemade favor was a 2.5" circle multi-colored crayon. Target has crayons on sale for back to school, so they were only .40 cents per box. I used 4 boxes, but could have gotten away with 2, since I only really needed 6 crayons.
I unwrapped all of the new crayons and broke them into quarters. I placed one or two of each color chunk into each cupcake section of the pan, so that the tin was about 1/2-3/4 full. Placed the pan in the oven at 250 degrees for 30 minutes. They come out watery, so let them sit out to cool. Then pop them out of the pan and voila! I wrapped ours up in plastic wrap and put a label on them. Kids love these especially in fancy shapes,  but unfortunately all my fancy baking pans are in storage right now.
*TIP* Do not use any other brand of crayon besides Crayola and DO NOT use washable crayons, they won't work I have tried!

I made these chocolate painter's pallets for the older kids who wouldn't go for all of the "art supplies", which went over very well. I created a template which you can download HERE for free: http://www.scribd.com/doc/60277087/Art-Party-Large-Pallet-Templates-by-Party-Starters

I printed out my template, placed it on a cookie tray and covered it with wax paper. In a double boiler I melted chocolate then placed the melted chocolate in a piping bag. With the piping bag trace the outline of the pallets on the template then fill in the outline with more chocolate. I used the back of a spoon to smooth each pallet out then placed a red, yellow, green and blue M&M onto the soft chocolate to resemble paint drops. When finished I popped the tray into the fridge to harden the chocolate. Once they were hard I wrapped each pallet in a plastic bag and tied it up with bakers twine.

Stay tuned,  I will have much more from this party the rest of this week! Tomorrow, the goodies!! Here is a sneak peek where I used my "Small Painter's Pallet template to make smaller chocolates for the tops of the cupcakes. I used frosting to resemble the paint blobs. You can find the Small Template here for free: http://www.scribd.com/doc/60277089/Art-Party-Small-Pallet-Templates-by-Party-Starters
